3. Who are you? What do you believe?
Church of the Ascension is an Episcopal Church and part of the Anglican Communion. The Anglican Communion is the gathering of Anglican and Episcopal churches from around the world. Today, the Anglican Communion comprises more than 80 million members in 44 regional and national member churches in more than 160 countries.The Episcopal Church is part of the Anglican Communion, and is comprised of 109 dioceses in 16 nations. “The Creeds are statements of our basic beliefs about God” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 851). We will always have questions, but in the two foundational statements of faith – the Apostles’ Creed used at baptism, and the Nicene Creed used at communion – we join Christians throughout the ages in affirming our faith in the one God who created us, redeemed us, and sanctifies us.
4. Is there a dress-code for worship? Most men wear a shirt with a collar, some still wear a jacket.
Most women wear "dressy-casual" (which only means that you'll see everything from heels to sandals
and dresses to nice slacks. Our youth, which is anyone under 30, will wear almost anything from
jeans and t-shirts with sandals to heels/dress shoes and dressy attire.
5. How long are the services?
The 8:00am Sunday service lasts from 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes.
The 10:00am Sunday service lasts from 1 hour, 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes.
The 5:00pm Sunday service lasts 50 minutes. The teachings after the service last 15 minutes.
6. What about children?
Children under the age of 6 (or 1st grade): birth - age 3 we have a nursery with carefully screened caregivers; they have a background check through the county and are certified through "Protecting God's Children" an abuse awareness program through the Episcopal Diocese of SW Florida. If you prefer to keep your child(ren) with you, we have a "chapel" on the north side with sound. There, you and your toddlers can play and move around. There is a changing table in the "chapel", plus age appropriate toys for toddlers and babies. There is also a privacy place for nursing mothers who like privacy.
Children age 3--age 5 are invited to attend "Godly Play" a Sunday School program to encourage our chlidren to know God through story and play. Snack is provided. This program occurs during the 10:00am Sunday service. The chldren leave during the service at 10:10am, following the children's story.
Children, 1st grade - 5th grade: Journeys meets after the Children's Story until Communion.
Youth in Middle School and High School attend classes following the 10:00am service. The Middle School meets across the street in the Green Room. The High School youth meet in the Youth Room across the street.
