The Betty Jane Dimmitt Carillon Tower & Ascension Carillon Guild

Learn to play Ascension's authentic traditional 49-bell carillon! Volunteers play the bells before and after services on Sunday mornings, proclaiming Christ to our neighborhood. If  you can read treble clef, you can learn to "chime" hymn tunes! The carillonneur learns to play on a practice keyboard in the choir room; instead of bells, this identical keyboard produces sound by striking small metal bars. The Ascension Carillon Guild plays before and after church services, for weddings and funerals, and at carillon concerts throughout the year. Lessons are free. The Guild meets Tuesdays at 10:30am.

Dedicated in 1982, the carillon is one of only three authentic carillons in the state of Florida. (North America has fewer than 180 carillons.) Its 49 tuned bronze bells, housed in a 75-foot tower, as well as the performer's cabin. were cast at the Royal Eijsbouts Foundry in The Netherlands. The carillon is fully chromatic and tuned to concert pitch, with bells encompassing four octaves and ranging in size from 31 pounds to 2.5 tons. The carillon is played year-round in conjunction with worship services, concerts weddings and funerals.

Church of the Ascension is affiliated with the North American Carillon School, a new consortium of carillon instructors across North America. Thru this school, students may pursue a diploma in the art of carillon performance.
