Welcome to Church of the Ascension
Spiritual Growth Opportunities for Adults
The Church of the Ascension offers a number of prayer groups, Bible studies, classes, and education courses to engage individuals at every stage of their spiritual journey.
We host an ecumenical men's Bible study every Thursday morning at 6:30 a.m. in the parish hall. We begin with singing praises to God, study the Bible for 30 minutes, and end with a time of prayer for the world and ourselves. We finish at 7:30 a.m. as we go out into the world to serve Christ. As the founder of the group, Vic Wickman, says, "we meet every Thursday until Jesus returns."
Courses & Retreats
Cursillo, a Spanish word meaning "short course", is a diocesan retreat, which helps those in the church understand their individual calling to be Christian leaders. It takes place at DaySpring Conference Center in Parrish, Florida, beginning on a Thursday evening and ending on Sunday. During the three days, participants hear a variety of talks from laypersons and clergy, strengthen their faith, and gain a deeper understanding of the teachings of Jesus. In order to attend, you must apply and receive approval from the priest.
Currently, all our classes are offered virtually. To join any class, view our event calendar (above). Beginning in September, there will be multiple offerings on several days of the week. On Sunday and Tuesday evenings we will present classes for those who cannot attend during the day-time.
Alpha Classes are not currently in session. Alpha is offered twice a year at the church.
When we resume our Wednesday worship, we will begin meeting for Centering Prayer following the service. Centering Prayer is silent prayer that prepares us to experience God's presence within us. It emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ.
The Women's Intercessory Prayer Group meets in the Green Room every Thursday morning from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., for intercessory prayers. Bringing open hearts, we pray for parish members, our clergy and staff, and those, near and far, who are in sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity throughout the world. We always welcome new members.
