Welcome to Church of the Ascension
Spiritual Growth Opportunities for Adults
The Church of the Ascension offers a number of prayer groups, Bible studies, classes, and education courses to engage individuals at every stage of their spiritual journey.
We meet Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. throughout the year, studying the Bible, one complete book at a time.
We host an ecumenical men's Bible study every Thursday morning at 6:30 a.m. in the parish hall. We begin with singing praises to God, study the Bible for 30 minutes, and end with a time of prayer for the world and ourselves. We finish at 7:30 a.m. as we go out into the world to serve Christ. As the founder of the group, Vic Wickman, says, "we meet every Thursday until Jesus returns."
Courses & Retreats
Cursillo, a Spanish word meaning "short course", is a diocesan retreat, which helps those in the church understand their individual calling to be Christian leaders. It takes place at DaySpring Conference Center in Parrish, Florida, beginning on a Thursday evening and ending on Sunday. During the three days, participants hear a variety of talks from laypersons and clergy, strengthen their faith, and gain a deeper understanding of the teachings of Jesus. In order to attend, you must apply and receive approval from the priest.
Friendship Groups consist of people who have participated in Cursillo weekends. Each group meets regularly. The groups provide a way to offer each other support in our spiritual growth.
Ultreya gatherings offer an opportunity for past attendees at Cursillo weekends to gather and provide support and encouragement in our spiritual growth. They meet approximately every two months on a Sunday evening.
Adult classes take place Sunday mornings (August through May), and Tuesday mornings and evenings September to November and January to March. Tuesday evening classes meet from September to November and January to March. They begin at 6:30 p.m. with a light supper. Teaching and discussions begin at 6:45 p.m.
Alpha Classes are not currently in session. Typically, on Sundays, at 9:15 a.m., the church conducts a Bible study or a course on Christianity such as ALPHA. We meet in the workroom after the Sunday 8 a.m. service. At 11:20 a.m., following the 10 a.m. service, join us in the parish hall.
Tuesday morning classes meet from September to November and January to March at 10 a.m. The clergy or lay leaders of the parish lead these classes. These are small groups and cover a wide variety of topics ranging from Bible and topical book studies to how we deal with various aspects of and events in our lives. We list classes in the Sunday bulletin and in our weekly announcement email. Thursday noon classes meet in the library from September to November and January to March at noon.
Centering Prayer is silent prayer that prepares us to experience God's presence within us. It emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ. We meet at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays in the church, after the 10 a.m. Healing Service and Eucharist.
Church of the Ascension maintains a prayer list in the church office. This allows us to pray regularly for those both within and outside of our community. Please contact us using the form at the bottom of this page to pray for people on this list or to add prayers.
The Women's Intercessory Prayer Group meets in the Green Room every Thursday morning from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., for intercessory prayers. Bringing open hearts, we pray for parish members, our clergy and staff, and those, near and far, who are in sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity throughout the world. We always welcome new members.
